Disc golf courses issues around the country

Many communities struggle to host disc golf. Problems range from difficulty fitting the course into local parks, the wear and tear on the environment and the behavior of the disc golf players.

Read about some of those issues below.

Pioneer Park, Billings, MT

  • Disc golf removed from Pioneer Park's master plan

...some who lived nearby told the council that disc golf was put in Pioneer Park illegally, and that gangs and drugs dominate the corner of the park nearest the disc golf course. Others said that too many disc golfers were ruining the pristine nature of the park. “We’re being overrun by people,” said Jim Sullivan, who lives at 333 Parkhill. “There’s drinking, there’s drugs. They can buy pot day in and day out there...

Bidwell Park, Chico, CA

Leddy Park, Burlington, VT

Leddy Park in Burlington Vermont was slated to have a disc golf course installed. Local activists opposed to the idea did a great deal of research and thanks to efforts at community and official outreach the group was able to get the plans cancelled.

Taylor Lake Village, TX

Corinth Community Park, Corinth TX

Pease Park, Austin, TX

Austin's Pease Park had a disc golf course for many years. In June of 2010, decision was made to close the course due to erosion, destruction of plants, and the incompatibility of a disc golf course with a mixed-use park.

The course closed on Dec 31, 2010. Meanwhile, plans to open another course in a different Austin park cause controversy.

"Disc golf and other park activities have overly compacted the soil, damaged tree bark and led to unstable creek banks and poor water quality at the park..."

"Putting a disc golf area close to the road, in and across major areas of a park that are (used for other purposes) is not the right thing to do in the environment..."

Willow River State Park, Hudson, WI

“Experience has taught us that although disc golf is a popular sport enjoyed by people of all ages, it is not compatible, given the limited space we have available, with adjacent park activities,” said Darrel Richer, park supervisor. “We are going to concentrate on supporting the traditional activities that are so important to the individuals and families who treasure this park.”

Robin Hill Farm, Sequim, WA

The Port Angeles area on Washington's Olympic Peninsula fought for four years over the installation of a disc golf course in Robin Hill Farms Park. In December of 2010, the decision was made to not install a course there, although other parks were to be considered.

"Many horseback riders, hikers, dog walkers and cyclists said disc golf would harm the quiet tranquility of the scenic park. Some said the proposal was rubber-stamped by the county's park advisory board."
